Description: The Palazzo Ducale is located in the historic centre of the city, capital of the Province. The antique seat of the city’s leaders, boasting a long and fascinating history, it is now the headquarters of the Provincial Government and faces onto the large elegant central square, known as Piazza Napoleone or Piazza Grande,
The palace has a richly complex architectural history encompassing a period from the Middle Ages to the Napoleonic era and also currently houses two cultural institutions: the Institution and Centre for Popular Traditions and the Paolo Cresci Foundation for the History of Italian Emigration, both dedicated to the important aim of preservation and historical memory. Also to be found in the Palazzo, are the History Institute in Lucca, the Resistance Institute, the UNESCO Forum, the Lucchese Academy for Science, Literature and Art, the Institute for Calabrian Studies and the Risorgimento Museum.
